A local’s guide to Napa Valley

Bottle Rock is this week already! Here are some of our insider tips so you can have a fun and unique trip! image

-Let’s start with breakfast! My personal favorite is the english muffins from Model Bakery (in St. Helena and Oxbow in Napa). You can even get a breakfast sandwich made with one! Seriously insanely good. I’d also recommend the charming and recently re-opened Oakville Grocery. For a sit-down experience go to The Thomas or Solage for brunch!

-Shopping is always on the to-do list and Napa Valley has some amazing finds. If you’re in the mood to splurge on some bling, go to Palladium or Patina! Owned by the adorable Marcus and Wayne, these jewelry stores are world class and right across the street from each other in St. Helena. Martin Design is always full of incredible interior inspiration. A new addition, off the beaten path is Steed! Flats has some of the best (you guessed it) flats around! I’ve been wearing their ballerina slippers for over 10 years. You can’t leave Napa Valley without buying some fabulous wine to take home. The divine 750 Wines has you covered! Head up to Calistoga to the Man’s Store for authentic workwear. Oxbow Market in Napa combines shopping with dining and drinking so make sure to check it out!

-Now what else to do?? I love hiking the Oat Hill Mine Trail in Calistoga. Afterwards relax with a spa treatment from Indian Springs or Solage! Feel like wine tasting in a gorgeous setting? Frog’s Leap! Why not pick up the cult favorite fried chicken from Thomas Keller’s Addendum at Ad Hoc and sit in the sun for a picnic? Have a glass of Lorenza Rosé while you’re there.

-Okay finally now… Dining! Napa is home to some of the best food EVER so have fun exploring and trying new things! I suggest a pizza face off between Ciccio and Redd Wood! Two great pizza spots and conveniently located across the street from each other! Gott’s Roadside (formerly known as Taylor’s Refresher) is a classic and a MUST. The ahi poke tacos are to die for. Visit the original in St. Helena or the Oxbow Market outpost in Napa. Stop by La Luna for the best burritos in town and possibly your life. Mustards Grill is a local institution. I literally grew up there and those onion rings just speak to my soul! Cindy Pawlcyn’s other restaurants Cindy’s Backstreet Kitchen and Cindy’s Wood Grill are fantastic as well. Waterfront dining at the charming Angele in downtown Napa is pure magic! Cook in St. Helena is the go-to for locals lunch and dinner. I love their minestrone soup! The Thomas is also fabulous for drinks on the roof or for dinner!

Now, make sure you come hang out at the Lorenza RoséFree People tent on the Citi Stage at the festival! Its going to be the hottest spot in town! Follow us @lorenzarose  @kissser @freepeople @bottlerocknapa on instagram and twitter for live updates. Much love and see you this week!!

Doing dirty vineyard work may not top the bucket lists of most fashion models, but St. Helena native Michèle Ouellet is no ordinary glamazon. The bicoastal 24-year-old has posed for the pages of Nylon, Vanity Fair, and Glamour and starred in campaigns for Madewell and Michael Kors, but she says she’s still a “diehard Napa girl” who grew up in a family of wine industry pros. Now Ouellet is blending her high fashion career and her homegrown Napa roots to produce a singularly stylish wine.

Launched in 2008, Lorenza Rosé is the passion project of Ouellet and her mom, Melinda Kearney. What was originally devised as a scheme to keep mother and daughter close while Ouellet was busy working in New York, the wine became a labor of love. “I fly back to be here from harvest to bottling,” she says. Lorenza (also the model’s middle name) was styled after the dry, blush wines of Southern France. The Bandol-style rosé, blended from Rhone varietals sourced from farms in Lodi, is a trendsetter in a region saturated with Cabernet. The wine is already getting top billing on lists at restaurants such as Thomas Keller’s Bouchon in L.A. and Fleur de Lys in SF. In the December 2009 issue of Food & Wine, it was selected as a staff favorite. This past February, Lorenza made its Vogue magazine editorial debut.

If being backed by a beautiful model weren’t story enough, Lorenza Rosé’s label is also an exhibit for chic photography and art. “I work with a lot of different photographers, and this was an opportunity to showcase that [collaboration],” she says. Ouellet and her mother commission a fresh photo for each vintage—the 2011 label, depicting Ouellet in a vintage hat and motorcycle jacket, was a joint effort between L.A. artist Van Alpert (Ouellet’s boyfriend) and London-based photographer Viktor Vauthier. Ouellet says the limited-edition artwork inspires drinkers to keep the bottles long after the wine is gone.

Grapes are currently being harvested for Lorenza Rosé’s 2012 vintage. “It’s exciting but also nerve-wracking,” she says. “Unlike in fashion, there is no retouching in winemaking.” Look for it in April 2013.

When you make true rosé harvest comes early.  This year was no exception.  The day after Labor Day we lowered the last of the Carignan into the press and called it done.  Our first pick was on August 29 from a Grenache vineyard which is new to us this year and we are thrilled with the fruit.  These giant vines were planted many years ago in very deep sandy soil.  They offered up their zesty fruit to us at around 20 Brix.  So flavorful and with just the right amount of pressure in the press the juice was a lovely pale salmon color.  On Labor Day we picked the Cinsault from the Bechtold Vineyard.  You may remember our article in the Sacramento Bee with a photo of those vines.  Bonsai-like in their yield, the Bechtold Vineyard was planted in 1886.   The Cinsault juice that came in off the press was super delicate, pear-like and the palest of pale. The next day we picked Carignan, our most colorful and flavorful fruit also from vines over 100 years old.  And the Mourvedre decided to come in that same day, a month earlier than last year which was nice for us.  It has good depth and great acidity.  The tanks are full, starting to ferment at very cool temperatures and in a few weeks we’ll start thinking about our blend. The flavors this year as usual are all unique with a common thread of VIBRANCY, great acidity, fresh, fruit and with a big dose of delight!  We are very excited about the 2012 harvest and it’s potential for an amazing rosé!

Happy Labor Day weekend everyone! I would love to be catching the Sprint Car Races in Calistoga, but NYC ain’t half bad either!! Wherever you are, kick back, relax and enjoy some rosé!! Send us pictures!!

We are so proud to be served at Public in NYC!!! Erin, you rule!

Harvest is a-comin!! Here is the lovely Melinda hanging out with our Grenache and Carignan! Everything is ripening up and looking great… Can’t wait for the 2012 Lorenza!!
